A local group, Pi Gamma Phi, was formed in 1984. The group officially became a chapter of Pi Beta Phi on October 19, 1996, marking the beginning of the National Panhellenic system at Pepperdine University. After a preparatory service in Elkins Auditorium on October 18 conducted by members of Grand Council, there was a Cookie Shine at Calamingos Ranch with the New Members and their families. The chapter was installed on October 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica. The installation Dinner was held in Wilshire Hall at the Miramar Sheraton in Santa Monica. On Sunday, October 20, there was a campus reception in the Fireside Room. There were 63 initiates, 33 undergraduates and 30 Pi Beta Phi alumnae. Anne Zantop Cioffi, Michigan Gamma served as General Chairman, and Initiation Chairman was Kim Everson, Indiana Zeta. Also present was Grand Vice President Finance Carol Warren, North Carolina Beta. Carrie Joyce, Missouri Alpha, was the Resident Graduate Consultant (known today as a Resident Leadership Development Consultant).
