Installation of Missouri Alpha
A local group, Iazug Club, was formed in 1899. The group officially became a chapter of Pi Beta Phi on May 27, 1899. Installation activities took place at the home of the Belcher Family on University Avenue and Hill Street. Grand President Grace Lass Sisson, Illinois Delta, installed the chapter. Missouri Alpha charter members were Mary Iglehart (Wear), Sue Stone (Smith), Maud Miller (Jones), Maud Rippey (Minear), Lillian Lohr, Gertrude Bayless (Mills) and Hettie Anthony.
Living at Missouri Alpha

The house was built in 1930 and was named one of Columbia, Missouri’s Notable Properties in 2013. It has 26 bedrooms and houses 72 women. The large white columns and the circle drive at the front of the house make it an outstanding Greek property on the University of Missouri campus.
Philanthropic Service
In the fall, young men across the Missouri campus come together and put on a pageant showcasing different talents and skills; the winner, chosen by a panel of judges, is crowned Mr. Pi Phi. In the spring, Missouri Alpha hosts Big Man on Court, a basketball tournament where men across campus join a team to compete for the big trophy. In addition, Pi Phis visit local elementary schools in Columbia to participate in Champions Are Readers®, in order to spend time with and read to the students.
Notable Alumnae
- Olivia Smith Moore, former Grand Treasurer. The Silver Slipper Award for Outstanding Chapter VP of Finance is named in Olivia’s honor, and is so named for her love of shoes. Every year, Neiman Marcus would send a truck full of shoes to her Ace of Clubs house in Texarkana, so that she could select new styles for her wardrobe. When she traveled to convention with a suitcase full of shoes, many attendees would visit her room to see her collection. Her home is now a museum in the East Texas Historical Association, and her many shoes and Pi Beta Phi memorabilia are among the displays in the home.
